Here is an example of some of the Community Engagement Activities that students are participating in on the weekends with their host families! Some families have homes on the beach that they like to go to on the weekend, or they go camping near the beach. Some students shared that yesterday they participated in a typical Spanish "comida," the biggest meal of the day around 2pm with their host families and their host families' friends, in which they experienced the social aspect of the culture. They were surprised to sit and talk for five hours. In the photo below, Ethan & Emi's host mom took them to a kitchen where they all served food together to underserved families. However, she notes that because they aren't yet 18, she had them help out in the back rather than serving out in the dining room! This sort of engagement helps us to connect with our local communities and give back, which is part of our IUHPFL honor code.
